Availability and Price
The price of the latest Blade in the Razer model is quite similar to its predecessors and it does not come cheap – it’s pretty expensive. The Razer Blade 2018 has a starting price at $1,899 (AU$2,899, £1,699), and it features a complete HD display (1,920 x 1,080) at 60Hz, the processor is the same as other Razer versions, although it comes with a 256Gb of storage and Nvidia GTX 1060 that delivers an amazing game experience.
The latest blade 2018 has different versions with different prices. The model in the table below costs about $2,599 (AU$3,999, £2,329). Same model with a different specs featuring 144Hz display, 512 Gb of storage and GTX 1060 goes for $2,199, and there is a model with same specs as seen in the table below with half the storage that goes for $2,399 (AU$3,699, £2,149).
Razer vs Others
Comparatively, the price for the most expensive Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501 that offers a stronger GTC 1080 and also a Nvidia G-Sync display cost about $2899. Same laptop goes for $2,299, but it features a GTX 1070 with a 120Hz display. You will have to pay additional 100 bucks to get the same graphics card in the Razer.
The entry level version of MSI GS65 Stealth cost about $1,799 (AU$2,439, £1,369), it features similar processors with the starting configuration as the Razer, but it features a faster display with 144Hz. The Memory and storage of the highest end of this laptop is twice the entry level version and it goes for $2,999 (AU$4,059, £2,279).
Cyber Monday and Black Friday are fast approaching, so now is the time to start thinking of the latest Razer Blade, that’s if you are interested in the Razer Blade 2018. We are confident that the latest Razer blade will feature in gaming deals and Black Friday laptop deals, so expect a little high value than usual. The price is totally worth it, although you can get a cheaper laptop with the same specs.
Currently, the best looking gaming laptop produced by Razer is the Razer Blade 15, featuring a unibody aluminum shell, and an all-black color. However, the 2018 Razer took a different look from the 2015 version, having a more angular shape and reducing the light features to only the Razer logo and keyboard.
Razer also made huge efforts in reducing the size of the latest Razer Blade, according to the manufacturer, this makes the Razer Blade 2018 the smallest 15.6-inch gaming laptop in the world. The laptop is about 0.66 inches thin on the GTX 1060 model, which is 1/10 thinner than is rivals mentioned above. The laptop is about 14 inches wide, the new, thinner screen made that possible. Another good thing about this Razer Blade is the proper positioning of the webcam just above the laptop screen while employing narrow bezels.
Despite the small size and thinness of the 2015 Razer Blade, the laptop is quite dense – it is heavier than the latest MSI 15-inch gaming laptop with a half-pound. Although the size of the charging brick was reduced, the laptop is still heavier compared to other light and thin gaming laptops, and the laptop was had more weight than we expected.
Besides the intense streamlining, the design of the Razer Blade has little difference from its previous models. The laptop, however, has a fantastic keyboard, the feel you get from punching it is appealing, smooth and the feedback is something you will want to experience.
The position of the ‘up’ arrow key is the only thing I dislike about the keyboard baffling. The up arrow is positioned between the ‘?’ and shift keys. This makes it difficult to hit the question mark button because we keep pressing the up arrow button.
Despite implementing a clickpad design in the laptop, which is something we love, the unfortunate situation about the trackpad is that the tracking surface is too wide. The trackpad picks up accidental swipes easily and it is a little twitchy. The trackpad is actually cool regardless of the size, it features an accurate and smooth Microsoft Precision tracking surface.
Finally on design, we do appreciate the quality speakers in the Razer Blade, the sound is pretty amazing compared to other notebooks in the market. But the baffling thing about it is that the laptop lacks the Windows Hello secure login option.
Adding to the design, the laptop also features a rectangular power button perfectly placed above the speaker on the right, and touching it feels smooth. However, a laptop like this for that price should not have problem featuring a secure login.
The display of the 2018 Razer Blade is simply amazing, Razer did remarkably well. The latest Razer features a 1080p panel, and have the ability to deflect light clare, all thanks to the matte coating. The display has a 144 Hz refresh rate, which outspaces the frame rate of several games played on the device; thus, games appear extremely smooth, a nice feature for good gaming experience on a laptop. The high frame rate of the latest Razer Blade can prevent or support possible flaws that may occur in creating consistent frame rates at high detail settings in either the GTX 1060 or GTX 1070.
The display also features a complete (100%) sRGB color range that helps support a wide variety of colors. You can also adjust the color using the factory screen calibration features in the laptop.
Considering the price and specs, we expect nothing less from the Razer Blade 2018, the performance, both in computing and graphics is top notch. The only set back is that the laptop has got a short battery span and it emits a lot of heat – despite the efforts made my Razer to eliminate it.
Parity The Razer Blade 2018 had similar performance with the GS65 Stealth when we tested it, although the Razer outpace have more frame per second in each graphics benchmark. Unluckily, testing the Zephyrus laptop with the same game was not possible, but its GTX 1080 performed better than the Razer’s 1070 in the 3DMark tests.
The Razer Blade 2018 is a beast
You can run any heavy application on this laptop or complete any computing task. The laptop is packed with a lot of RAM and the Latest Intel Coffee Lake Processor. It also features 4k display, giving you an amazing game experience.
Despite all the efforts Razer made available in creating an amazing laptop like the 2018 Razer Blade, another fault we noticed which was stated earlier is that the laptop produces a lot of heat from both sides of the base just under the hinge after some minutes of gameplay. Unluckily, the latest vapor chamber cooling system developed by Razer cannot reduce the unbearable heat produced by the laptop due to the combination of additional processing and graphics power alongside the smaller vent that makes it difficult for heat to flow out.
TIPS: You have to be cautions before you decide to use this laptop on your lap during game play because of the heat it emits. Another thing to do is to avoid overclocking the Razer Blade 2018 while placed on your lap.
We are pretty familiar with poor battery lifespan in gaming laptops over the years, but this is no longer the same as it used to be. Gaming laptops with battery life of about 5-6 hours is pretty common, but such is not the case with the Razer Blade 2018, the laptop battery does not last. From out test, the laptop came short of the GS65 Stealth by one hour and lasted longer than the Zephyrus laptop by an hour.
Considering the price of the Razer Blade 2018, we expected a battery that will last for about 4-5 hours when running heavy or light applications, but unluckily, the laptop cannot survive short flights without an outlet.
Software and Features
The Razer Synapse is the only preloaded software that comes with the Razer Blades. This software can be used to control different settings for RGB lighting in the laptop, but the latest Razer Synapse in the 2018 Razer Blade has more functions and it can also be used to tweak the laptop’s performance.
The latest version of the software in the 2018 model can be used to boost the video memory frequency and graphics chip’s processor by 300MHz and 100MHz respectively by activating the gaming mode. Activating the gaming mode increases the fps, which helps in boosting games, but doing this will only raise the amount of heat emitting from the laptop. Ensure your ember this before overclocking the system.
The Razer Blade 2018 is one of the best laptops in the Razer series and also one of the best gaming laptops on the planet so far, but despite its amazing appearance and performance, the laptop still has some flaws that’s common in previous Razer laptops and other gaming laptops. You will get the best from this laptop in terms of smoothness and fps compared to other laptops with its 144Hz display and overclocking mode.
Giving the expensive price of this laptop, one may lose interest in the Razer Blade 2018 due to the slightly goofy keyboard layout, lack of Windows Hello Support, poor battery life, severe heat emission and weight.
Regardless of the flaws, the Razer Blade 2018 clearly tops the list in the Razer series, and it is also makes the list of top gaming laptops, featuring an incredibly design and performance. The design, and build quality of the Razer Blade 2018 will be a nice option for someone who wants the best out of gaming and work.
